"....there are times where they probably will punish you for asking. But that only means that you're having an effect on the system." -Harlan Sexton

Harlan is about a suicidal, death-obsessed teenager by the name of Harlan Sexton. Turning himself into a ticking bomb, he has decided to kill himself at the end of the school year unless his closest friend, Julian, can find a way to change his mind. And that's just the beginning - the tension is amped up by the return of his abusive redneck father, a town serial killer stalking his female classmates, and an all-out violent war between Harlan and a jock bully from school. If John Hughes had directed a movie inspired by the Columbine tragedy, it would be like this book.

Harlan (Audible Audio Edition) David Whitman Tim Campbell Crossroad Press Books

I have to admit, I didn't know what to expect from this novel. It took me back to my high school days, and I realized that this story focused on true to life stuff. Although it did not have a climactic ending; the ending was still phenomenal. Surely, many people who read this book will easily identify with Harlan or any one of his friends. There was fantastic character development in this novel, and great story lines. Not usually the kind of book I read, but I certainly approve of this one.

Harlan (Audible Audio Edition) David Whitman Tim Campbell Crossroad Press Books Reviews

This book was an amazing story of hope, despair, love, friendship, and the depression that comes along with being a teenager. It was well written, and kept my attention, which is not always an easy thing to do. I look forward to reading more by this author.
This is one powerful book. I can't recommend this enough!
Harlan, a young teenager with his whole life ahead of him, the kicker, he plans to commit suicide. This amazing story about friendship, love, despair, death, and every emotion that everyone has felt at some point in life, is truly an epic novel. Never before have I read a novel where I truly found myself feeling every feeling that the main character was feeling, Whitman does an amazing job of portraying all the pressures and anxieties that all of us go through during our adolescent years. The story is gripping and engaging, every character you can relate to, for better or worst. Harlan is an amazing piece of work that combines all the emotions of becoming who you are in such a short and addictive read. A great read for any reader, young or old, teens and adults can relate to this book in so many ways it's not even funny! A+, and would recommend to any reader.
So pleased I purchased the audiobook of Harlan! The narrator fell perfectly in tune with this story exploring all things teenage angst. I found myself literally laughing out loud at the escapdes of the engaging characters and ten minutes later tearing up over emotiive scenes demonstrating a very real and current insight into the minds and hearts of teenagers, faced with an increasingly brutal society. Throw in drama, love, lust and a murder here and there and you have a highly entertaining ride! Five starts plus! I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
I read this over a few days and came away really caring for these characters, even the ones I shouldn't have liked at all. That has to be a tough job for a writer to pull off, but David Whitman does so magnificently. Even his narrator, Harlan Sexton, a 16 year old outcast with big time suicidal thoughts is hard to like sometimes.

But in his journal (possible suicide note to the world?), Harlan's honesty, self examination and self discoveries are brilliantly brought to life and you won't be able to stop yourself from falling deeply into his world, learning to like and maybe even love him and his friends and family, wacky and weird and downright cruel and evil as some of them are!

HARLAN deserves a wider audience and all the praise it has received. I hope the author doesn't mind, but it reminded me of the novel & upcoming film of the same name, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER...only much darker and more dangerous!

My only gripe...I wish it were longer!
This is the best book I've read so far in 2004. Harlan is a story about an angery, introverted, intelligent, creative teenager who does not fit into any of the cliques at his high school. He comes from a broken home and his alcoholic father was extremely abusive. Harlan has decided to end his life. This book deals with "coming of age," young love, a serial murder mystery, bullying, child abuse, etc. Whitman wrote the story of Harlan in a diary form. To read Harlan gives you the sense of peeking into one's secret diary where only a young teen can express his fears, insecurities, his thoughts, and his latent desires. The author David Whitman was able to draw upon his own experiences when he wrote Harlan. If you felt like you never fit in during high school and you were bullied, ridiculed by teachers or students because you were different, then you will identify with Harlan. Whitman is a writer that should not be missed. Try and locate a copy of Harlan. You will be glad you did.
