Hyenas marks the always-welcome return of Joe R. Lansdale’s most indelible fictional creations Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. Once again, the embattled but resilient duo find themselves enmeshed in a web of danger, duplicity, and escalating mayhem. The result is a tightly compressed novella that is at once harrowing, hilarious, and utterly impossible to put down.

The story begins with a barroom brawl that is both brutal and oddly comic. The ensuing drama encompasses abduction, betrayal, robbery, and murder, ending with a lethal confrontation in an East Texas pasture. Along the way, readers are treated to moments of raucous, casually profane humor and to scenes of vivid, crisply described violence, all related in that unmistakable Lansdale voice. An essential addition to an already imposing body of work, Hyenas shows us both the author and his signature characters at their inimitable best. It doesn’t get better than this.

Hyenas also includes the bonus Hap Collins short story, “The Boy Who Became Invisible”.

Hyenas eBook Joe R Lansdale

After ripping though another chapter - albeit a short chapter - of crime fiction's most unusual dynamic duo, one wonders when the unusually talented Joe Lansdale will finally get his due. If not the preeminent, Lansdale is arguably the most prolific writer of southern noir, including this little gem, Hap and Leonard's "Hyenas." If East Texas' Hap and Leonard need an introduction, you're in the wrong review. Go back to "Savage Season" knowing that you've got about nine installments of violence-rich entertainment ahead - mayhem that may wear if not for Lansdale's keen insight and wisdom cleverly disguised in the clipped and cynical patter that serves as dialog between these unlikely heroes.

"Hyenas" is staccato quick and entertaining in a guilty pleasure kind of way - a 100 page novella fast on the heels of the more complex "Devil Red." True to formula and with no pages to waste, "Hyenas" opens up with the aftermath of an epic bar fight in which three rednecks learn that Leonard may not be the best target for sexual and racial taunts. That leaves one protagonist with his head sticking through the drywall with a thugs-eye view of the urinal, another crawling through the parking lot to escape Leonard's wrath. And that pretty much sets the pace for a simple plot as Hap and Leonard volunteer to help out the wayward kid brother of one of the bar fight assailants - part laughter, part thrills, part suspense, and a large part vigilante-style justice. While certainly not "serial" in any technical sense, "Hyenas" does continue a darker theme that starts in "Vanilla Ride," threads its way through "Devil Red," and builds more momentum here as Hap struggles with the violence and death at his hand even as his embrace tightens. In that light, I suspect the cagey Lansdale has more up his sleeve than a simple tale of rescue and redemption - a new direction that hopefully the Hap and Leonard faithful won't wait long to see.

Hyenas eBook Joe R Lansdale Reviews

I was turned on to Hap and Leonard earlier this year. This may not be the best of that series, but it is still a very good read. Partly because I know the area well, (I know which bank was being robbed and where there culprits fled to) this story was easy to follow. I will purchase more of this series. I love the characters, (East Texas is full of them but most people find them hard to believe.) The only flaw is that this book is not longer, and for someone that hates long books, this says much. The short story at the end explained some of the background of the hero, but it was very distrubing- as are many of the Lansdale stories. That may be what I like about him.
This is another entry to the fantastic "Hap and Leonard" series of mystery thrillers by champion mojo storyteller, Joe R. Lansdale. If you're as big of a fan as I am, you won't be disappointed, since this has all the elements we've come to expect from the series...dark humor, sassy, smartass dialog, great action rich in detail and wonderfully-drawn characters. Lansdale never fails to surprise, as he throws in enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. And yet, it's a fast read. There also is a bonus story at the end, "The Boy Who Became Invisible," a heartbreaking tale about the hard lessons we sometimes learn at a very young age, and at the expense of those closest to us. The conclusion is shattering, but not entirely unexpected, but I must admit that my stomach sank even further when I got to that final sentence.

"Hyenas" is a fine and worthy read.
This one was quite short, but very good. This is exactly what I read the H&L books for, if only a small dose of it. It had all of the violence, all of the armchair philosophy, and all of the banter one expects from this pair when at their best, and they were getting along (gasp!). I haven't enjoyed the last few H&L novels much - it seems to me that perhaps JRL is tired of the characters, since he's having them bicker endlessly, and/or nearly killed recently, and I can't say that's what I'm looking for in these books. I don't want a dose of friends falling out, I don't want a dose of magic super-ninja killer clans, I want a dose of fun with the usual H&L brand of roughness and wit. This book leaves the junk out and delivers the goods in spades. I just wish it had been longer.
My suggestion would be to read Savage Season, Mucho Mojo, The Two Bear Mambo, Bad Chili, Rumble Tumble, Captains Outrageous, Vanilla Ride, Devil Red, Veil's Visit(good luck finding a copy), and then Hyenas. These are all of Joe's Hap & Leonard novels in order. I've read the entire series over many times and they never fail to be suspenceful, funny, and a joy to read. If you're into crime fiction and you've never read Joe Lansdale's Hap & Leonard books, you've not fully experienced where this genre can take you. Makes James Patterson "work" look like Harlequin romances. Think Elmore Leonard, Raymond Chandler, and Jim Thompson all rolled into one. Maybe even some Stephen King and Thomas Harris. Extreme violence not for small children and the mentally disturbed. All these books move at pace of a Texas tornado. Try 'em and believe me, you'll get hooked!!
Hyenas, by Joe R. Lansdale, is an excellent novella. Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, two East Texas tough guys, try to help extricate a man's younger brother from a gang of thieves who have persuaded him to join them. That's what hap and Leonard do. They help people who are being victimized by criminal thugs. Hap and Leonard are uniquely qualified to do this sort of work because they are extremely adept at bare-knuckle, no-rules, hand-to-hand combat. They are also knowledgeable and skilled with weapons, and most of all they can be mean as hell when they need to be. They reveal their skills and how mean they can be to the hyenas in this shocking, but satisfying novella. It is a great read! In addition, this eBook contains a short story (The Boy who Became Invisible) from Hap's teenage years which reveals something about his aversion to victimization of innocent people.
